History

Founded in 2014 by William Li, NIO has established itself as a leading premium electric vehicle manufacturer in China. The company is distinguished by its innovative battery-swap technology, allowing drivers to exchange depleted batteries for fully charged ones in approximately three minutes. NIO is actively expanding internationally with production facilities operated in cooperation with JAC Group in Hefei.

EV strategy

NIO builds battery-electric cars for the premium segment only, and battery swapping is what sets it apart. At the end of 2025 there were 3,676 swap stations, most of them in China; since October 2024 NIO has been bringing in partners to share the cost of building them. Alongside that the company develops its own powertrain technology and vehicle software.

Good to know

  • NIO reached a milestone of 100 million completed battery swaps in February 2026.
  • The company holds over 2,100 patents in charging and swapping technologies, with more than 1,500 specifically for battery swapping.
  • NIO announced at least 1,000 new swap stations for 2026; 167 had been added by May, and year-end expectations now stand at 4,500 to 4,600 stations.
  • The company proactively offers its battery-swap technology to third parties for global deployment.
