For most people: yes. The average daily mileage in Germany is around 40 kilometres, and over 90 % of single trips are shorter than 50 kilometres. Even EVs with smaller batteries (40–50 kWh) cover everyday needs comfortably. More important than peak range is the question of how and where you can charge regularly. Once that is sorted, day-to-day life with an EV quickly feels normal.

On the road you charge at public stations or fast chargers. AC stations with 11 or 22 kW are found in cities at car parks, supermarkets or workplaces, good for longer stays. DC fast chargers are mostly at motorways, fuel stations and busy hubs; power ranges typically from 50 to 400 kW, with some newer sites at 600 kW or more. How fast you actually charge also depends on the car, since many models cap at 150–250 kW. Map apps for public charging stations or your charging provider's app show what is available nearby.
A wallbox is not strictly required. If you can charge every night at home and drive normal distances, a regular Schuko socket (about 2.3 kW) works well. In eight hours of overnight charging it adds around 18 kWh, enough for 100–130 km of range and easily covering typical daily mileage. An 11 kW wallbox charges about five times faster and is built for continuous use. It mostly pays off if you drive long distances every day, charge multiple EVs, or want to manage your electricity tariff intelligently. One note when charging from a socket: it should be modern and in good condition, since it carries heavy load for many hours. From 4.6 kW connection power, the charging unit must be reported to the grid operator; from 12 kW it requires approval (as of 2026; thresholds may change).
Across the full ownership period, EVs are often cheaper. Electricity costs around 4–8 euros per 100 km, petrol/diesel typically 10–15 euros. Maintenance, brakes and clutch wear are less frequent on an EV. On the other side: a higher purchase price and sometimes higher insurance. From around 60,000–100,000 km of total mileage the balance usually tips in favour of the EV.
Modern EV batteries typically last 10–15 years or 200,000–300,000 km, many models considerably longer. Manufacturers usually offer 8 years or 160,000 km of warranty on a minimum capacity of 70 %. In practice, most batteries reach this threshold only well after the warranty has expired. Care through moderate fast charging, mid-level state of charge during long downtime and avoiding extreme cold or heat extends battery life.
