Standard on board: eleven safety systems are mandatory on new cars in the EU

The EU requires them on every newly registered car, whatever the brand, the price or the trim. When a system like this turns up on an options list, what you pay for there is the fuller version, not the basic function.

Mandatory since July 2024

  • Automatic emergency brakingSpots an obstacle or a car ahead and brakes by itself if you do not react.
  • Emergency lane keepingSteers back when the car drifts out of its lane.
  • Intelligent speed assistanceReads speed limits and speaks up when you are over one. Can be switched off.
  • Drowsiness and attention warningNotices from the way you drive when your concentration slips, and suggests a break.
  • Reversing detectionA camera or sensors warn you about whatever is behind the car when you back up.
  • Emergency stop signalUnder hard braking the brake lights flash, so the driver behind reacts sooner.
  • Event data recorderRecords the seconds around a crash. Anonymous, stays in the car, cannot be switched off.
  • Alcohol interlock interfaceThe standardised socket only. The device itself is not fitted.
  • Protection against cyberattacksThe manufacturer has to secure the vehicle software against outside attacks.

Added in July 2026

  • Emergency braking for pedestrians and cyclistsSecond stage: the system now has to recognise people, not just vehicles.
  • Distraction warningA camera watches where you look and warns you when your eyes stay off the road.

Checked in August 2026. The basis is EU Regulation 2019/2144, Annex II. The dates apply to first registration, not to the model year.
