History

XPENG (Xiaopeng Motors) was founded in 2014 by He Xiaopeng, Xia Heng, and He Tao in Guangzhou. The company merged internet product design expertise with automotive engineering to create intelligent electric vehicles as software platforms. XPENG went public in 2020 and has positioned itself as a leading innovative EV manufacturer in China, with factories in Zhaoqing, Guangzhou, and Wuhan.

EV strategy

XPENG focuses on intelligent, technology-driven electric vehicles with software at the core. The strategy encompasses over-the-air software updates, advanced driver-assistance systems (XPILOT), and the concept of cars as computing platforms. XPENG self-develops batteries, chips, and operating systems, and has a vision for global expansion with sales targets outside China.

Good to know

  • XPENG pioneered over-the-air software updates to improve vehicle features after delivery, a practice now industry standard.
  • Founder and CEO He Xiaopeng is aiming for XPENG to sell half its cars outside China by 2033; in the first half of 2026 the figure was 19 percent.
  • XPENG is developing the VLA 2.0 (Vision-Language-Action) autonomous driving system, rolled out via over-the-air updates.
  • Since early 2026 all three plants are in place: Guangzhou (200,000 vehicles a year), Zhaoqing (120,000) and the completed Wuhan site (100,000); together they are designed for up to 600,000.
