History
Volvo was founded in 1927 in Gothenburg with safety as its core principle. The first Volvo, the ÖV 4, rolled off the assembly line on 14 April 1927. Volvo built its reputation on safety innovations, notably Nils Bohlin's three-point seatbelt in 1959. Ford sold Volvo to Geely Holding in 2010 for $1.8 billion, and the company was publicly listed on Nasdaq Stockholm in 2021.
EV strategy
Volvo intended to sell only electric cars from 2030. In September 2024 the brand took that back: it now aims for 90 to 100 percent electric cars and plug-in hybrids by 2030, with up to ten percent allowed to be mild hybrids. Volvo cited slow demand, a charging network growing too slowly and European tariffs on electric cars built in China.
Good to know
- Nils Bohlin invented the modern three-point seatbelt in 1959, and Volvo made the patent freely available to all: a safety innovation that has saved over 1 million lives.
- Volvo founded Polestar with Geely in 2017, a standalone high-performance electric brand.
- Safety has been a core Volvo philosophy since its founding: the company introduced many safety features that later became industry standards.
- Volvo is investing in advanced charging infrastructure and autonomous driving technology as part of its electrification strategy.
