History

VinFast was founded in June 2017 by Vietnamese conglomerate Vingroup, whose founder Pham Nhat Vuong still carries the project. A completely new plant went up on Cat Hai island near Hai Phong in 21 months. In 2022 VinFast dropped the combustion engine and went all in on electric cars, and in August 2023 the shares reached Nasdaq through a SPAC merger.

EV strategy

VinFast relies on plants of its own rather than contract manufacturers: the Hai Phong home plant was joined in 2025 by factories in Thoothukudi in India and Subang in Indonesia. The North Carolina plant, planned since 2022, has been pushed back repeatedly; VinFast resumed construction in April 2026 and is now aiming to start production in 2028.
