History

Toyota Motor was founded in 1937 by Kiichiro Toyoda as a spinoff from Toyota Industries. The company developed its first engine in 1934 and first passenger car in 1936 (Toyota AA). Toyota became the world's largest automaker in 2008 and is renowned for innovations including the Lexus luxury brand (1989) and the Toyota Prius (1997), the world's first mass-produced hybrid vehicle.

EV strategy

Toyota runs broad: hybrids, plug-in hybrids and battery-electric cars side by side. The figures issued in 2021 for 2030, 30 electric models and 3.5 million electric cars sold a year, still stand, but Toyota now calls them benchmarks for shareholders rather than targets; it halved the 2026 interim figure from 1.5 million to 800,000 in 2024. Work on solid-state batteries continues.
