History
Smart was founded in 1994 as a joint venture between Swiss watchmaker Swatch (SMH) and Daimler-Benz. The concept was to create small, stylish city cars with personalization options like Swatch watches. After the years at the Hambach plant in France, the 2019 joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely took control of the brand and shifted production to China.
EV strategy
Smart set out as an electric-only brand: the #1 arrived in 2022, followed by the #3 and #5, all battery-electric on Geely's SEA platform, with Mercedes-Benz design and Geely engineering. It has not been electric-only since December 2025: the #6 is a saloon with a plug-in hybrid whose 1.5-litre petrol engine stretches the range past 1,800 kilometres.
Good to know
- The original idea for a small city car came in 1982 from SMH CEO Nicolas Hayek, who wanted to carry the success of Swatch watches over to the car.
- The name Smart is an acronym: 'Swatch Mercedes Art'.
- The Hambach, France factory was humorously called 'Smartville' because it was built specifically for Smart production.
- Smart was a pioneer in small electric vehicles for the mass market, long before most other manufacturers pursued electrification seriously.
