History

Renault Group was founded in 1899 by Louis Renault and his brothers. The company revolutionized automotive manufacturing with innovative designs like the 1899 Voiturette, which popularized transmission shafts and gear drive. After World War II, Renault was nationalized but later returned to private control, forming a strategic alliance with Nissan in 1999. Today, Renault is one of Europe's leading automotive groups with a major focus on electrification.

EV strategy

In 2021 Renault announced ten new electric models by 2025 under its 'eWays ElectroPop' programme. In March 2026 CEO François Provost replaced that plan with 'futuREady': 36 new models by 2030, 16 of them fully electric. In 2025 the Renault brand sold 151,939 electric cars, some 72 percent more than the year before, with the R5 E-Tech accounting for over 100,000 since launch. The ElectriCity factory is Europe's largest production facility dedicated to electric vehicles.

  • The company pioneered shaft drive and direct transmission with universal joints, shaping modern automobile engineering.
