History
Porsche was founded in 1931 by Ferdinand Porsche, Adolf Rosenberger, and Anton Piëch as an engineering office in Stuttgart. In 1937, the company built a development plant in Zuffenhausen, relocating completely there in 1938. Porsche designed groundbreaking vehicles including the Volkswagen Beetle and established itself as a manufacturer of high-performance sports cars, the brand's core competency since inception.
EV strategy
Porsche has dropped its 2030 electric target and now runs on two tracks: the Taycan remains the electric flagship, while the brand plans a wave of new combustion and hybrid models. CEO Oliver Blume announced a new compact combustion SUV for 2028 at the latest, the Cayenne stays in the range as a petrol car, and the 718 Boxster and Cayman return with combustion engines.
Good to know
- The Porsche Taycan is Porsche's first series production electric vehicle and shares its J1 platform with the Audi e-tron GT.
- In 2022, Porsche projected EVs would represent over 80% of sales by 2030; by 2025 this was only 22.2%.
- The Porsche Zuffenhausen plant was constructed in 1938 on approximately three hectares.
- Porsche designed the revolutionary original blueprints of the Volkswagen Beetle and the Porsche 356, the first true Porsche sports car.
