History
Great Wall Motor presented ORA in May 2018 and launched the brand in Baoding that August. ORA was set up as an electric only brand from the start and arrived with deliberately friendly looking small cars, all of them named after cats. The brand reached Europe in late 2022, and in November 2023 GWM reorganised the names: the Funky Cat became the ORA 03.
EV strategy
ORA was meant to be the electric way into the GWM world, with compact cars and retro styling instead of technical talk. In Europe that has not worked out so far: the ORA 03 was withdrawn in the United Kingdom in spring 2026, and the new ORA 5 comes not only as an electric car but also as a hybrid and with a combustion engine.
Good to know
- The brand name nods to mathematician Leonhard Euler; GWM also reads it as open, reliable and alternative.
- Until November 2023 the models were called Black Cat, White Cat, Good Cat, Funky Cat and Ballet Cat; then numbers replaced the cats.
- A brand founded as electric only now sells its newest model with a combustion engine too.
