History
Opel was founded in 1862 by Adam Opel in Rüsselsheim am Main as a sewing machine manufacturer. The company expanded into bicycle production in 1886 and automobile manufacturing in 1899. After over a century under General Motors (1929–2017), Opel was acquired by PSA Group in 2017 and became part of Stellantis in 2021.
EV strategy
In 2023 CEO Florian Huettl announced that Opel would sell only electric cars in Europe from 2028. In August 2025 the brand withdrew that and is sticking to its multi-energy range of battery, plug-in hybrid and combustion models for as long as demand holds. Bestsellers such as the Corsa-e and Astra Electric remain its electric backbone.
