History

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation was established on April 22, 1970, as an independent subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI). The spin-off followed the successful 1969 launch of the Galant and growth in commercial vehicles. The company remains part of the Mitsubishi keiretsu, one of Japan's largest industrial groups, and works strategically with Nissan.

EV strategy

Mitsubishi pursues a pragmatic 'EV-lite' strategy offering a broad range of drivetrains: combustion engines, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery electric vehicles. The brand showed the Eclipse Sportback EV in June 2026 and puts it on sale in North America in the autumn of 2026; underneath it is the new Nissan Leaf with its own bodywork. Further electric cars are part of the Momentum 2030 plan.

Good to know

  • Mitsubishi Motors introduced the i-MiEV in 2009, one of the world's first mass-produced electric vehicles.
  • Since 1970, the company has been a strategic partner with global automakers, including Nissan and Renault (Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance).
  • The Mitsubishi Group is structured around the 'gosanke' (three main branches): MUFG (banking), Mitsubishi Corporation (trading), and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (industrial manufacturing).
