History
The Mini brand originated with the classic Mini automobile developed by the British Motor Corporation in 1959. In 1969, 'Mini' became an official marque. BMW acquired the brand in 1994 through its purchase of the Rover Group and revived it in 2001 with a modern, entirely new Mini Cooper. Today Mini operates as a distinct brand under BMW ownership.
EV strategy
BMW and Mini follow a flexible electrification strategy called 'Power of Choice'. The Mini Countryman is built on an architecture supporting both combustion and electric powertrains. The 2021 plan to launch the last petrol model in 2025 and be an all-electric brand by 2030 did not happen: in June 2026 BMW postponed the return of electric Mini production to Oxford indefinitely. Oxford has built only combustion models since 2024, and the electric models come from China and Leipzig.
