History
MG was founded in 1924 by Cecil Kimber in Oxford, Great Britain, and evolved into a storied British sports car marque. The company was acquired by China's Nanjing Automobile Corporation in 2005, which was itself purchased by SAIC Motor in 2007. Today MG is a fully Chinese-owned brand with global distribution and led China's single-brand export rankings for five consecutive years from 2019.
EV strategy
MG drives its growth with electric cars. For the premium end, SAIC founded the electric brand IM, short for Intelligence in Motion, together with Alibaba and Zhangjiang Hi-Tech in December 2020; it was presented in January 2021 and produces models such as the IM L6. In February 2026 MG became the first Chinese car brand to have sold more than one million vehicles in Europe.
