History
Mazda was founded in 1920 by Jujiro Matsuda in Hiroshima as Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd., beginning automobile production in 1931. The company remained independent for decades despite Ford being a major shareholder from 1974 to 2015. After Ford's exit, Mazda became fully independent and today operates a strategic partnership with Toyota, which holds approximately 5% of shares.
EV strategy
Mazda has scaled back its electric target: instead of the 25 percent named earlier, the brand now expects only around 15 percent fully electric vehicles by 2030, is cutting the related investment by a fifth and has pushed its first in-house electric car back to 2029 at the earliest. Instead the hybrid range grows from one model to four by 2027. Partnerships with Toyota, Changan and others keep costs down.
Good to know
- Mazda is one of the few major Japanese automakers that remains fully independent.
- The company combines Japanese engineering tradition with a marketing philosophy called 'Jinba Ittai' (driver and car as one).
- Hiroshima, Mazda's headquarters, is also home to the Mazda Museum documenting company history.
