History

Lucid was founded in 2007 as Atieva, initially focusing on EV batteries and powertrain systems. The company rebranded to Lucid Motors in 2016, shifting focus to luxury electric sedans. Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund invested over $9 billion, acquiring majority ownership.

EV strategy

Lucid focuses exclusively on luxury electric vehicles with premium technology. The company offers the Lucid Air sedan and the seven-seat Gravity SUV. In Saudi Arabia, Lucid has been assembling cars from kits pre-built in Arizona since 2023. The actual factory, with stamping, body shop and paint shop, is due to be finished at the end of 2026 and to ramp from 2027, designed for around 150,000 vehicles a year; the Saudi state has committed to buying up to 100,000 vehicles over ten years.
