History

Colin Chapman built his first car in 1948 and founded Lotus Engineering in 1952. The company has been based at Hethel in Norfolk since 1966, on a former military airfield whose runway is now the test track. Chapman's lightweight thinking shaped road and racing cars alike. After General Motors, Bugatti restorer Romano Artioli and Proton, Geely took a majority stake in 2017.

EV strategy

The electric Eletre and Emeya are not built at Hethel but by Lotus Technology in Wuhan, China. Lotus had announced in 2021 that it would build only electric cars from 2028; in November 2024 the company boss withdrew that target, and since May 2026 the brand has officially run several tracks at once, with combustion, hybrid and electric cars.
