Ownership
Toyota Motor Corporation (luxury division)

History

Lexus began as Toyota's secret Project F1 in 1983 and officially launched in August 1989 in the US with the LS 400 and ES 250 sedans. In 2005, Lexus separated organizationally from Toyota with dedicated design, engineering, and manufacturing facilities. In 2024, Lexus moved to its new headquarters in Shimoyama, Japan.

EV strategy

Lexus runs hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electric cars side by side on shared platforms rather than committing to an electric-only course. The RZ is fully electric, and the 2026 ES comes as a hybrid and as a battery version. At the end of 2026 the TZ follows as the brand's first three-row electric SUV, sister model to Toyota's Highlander BEV.

Good to know

  • Lexus is Japan's best-selling premium brand and is sold in more than 90 countries (as of 2026).
  • The revised RZ arrived in 2026 with simulated gearshifts that Lexus calls Interactive Manual Drive; the steer-by-wire yoke is offered in Europe and Japan but not in North America.
  • The strategy emphasizes hybrids over an electric-only approach.
