History

Leapmotor was founded in 2015 in Hangzhou by Fu Liquan and Zhu Jiangming, who had previously built the surveillance-technology group Dahua Technology together; Zhu runs the company as chairman. The brand launched publicly in March 2017, and the first delivery followed in June 2019 with the electric S01 coupé. In October 2023 Stellantis invested roughly 1.5 billion euros to become a strategic shareholder, and since September 2024 the joint sales venture Leapmotor International has brought the cars to Europe.

EV strategy

Leapmotor builds electric only: both battery-electric and range-extended, where a combustion engine generates electricity and never drives the wheels. The strategy rests on unusually deep vertical integration: electric motors, control units and lighting technology are developed in-house, keeping the cost of the key components under the company's own control.

Good to know

  • Both founders came from video surveillance: Fu Liquan and Zhu Jiangming had previously built Dahua Technology, one of the world's largest makers of surveillance equipment.
  • As early as 2018, Leapmotor used CES Asia to present “Lingxin 01”, an AI chip for automated driving it had co-developed.
  • European sales do not run through Leapmotor itself but through Leapmotor International, a Stellantis-led joint venture based in Amsterdam.
