History
Kia was founded in May 1944 as Kyungsung Precision Industry, initially manufacturing steel tubing and bicycle parts. The company produced South Korea's first domestic bicycle, the Samchuly, in 1951. After the 1997 Asian financial crisis, Hyundai acquired 51% in 1998, establishing Kia as South Korea's second-largest automaker.
EV strategy
Kia has lowered its electric target: at its CEO Investor Day in April 2026 the brand named one million electric cars a year for 2030, down from 1.6 million in 2023, plus 1.1 million hybrids. The electric range grows to 14 models by then, among them the EV2, Syros EV and EV4. Next-generation batteries are meant to deliver up to 40 percent more capacity and 15 percent higher energy density.
Good to know
- Kia targets 4.13 million global vehicle sales a year and a 4.5% market share for 2030 (as of April 2026).
- The new platform brings 9% more motor output and Level 2++ autonomous driving.
- The Purpose-Built Vehicle range grows with the PV5 (2025), PV7 (2027) and PV9 (2029).
