History
The Jeep brand originated with Willys-Overland Motors during World War II, with the trademark filed in February 1943. Production began in Toledo in 1945 and continues there today. After ownership changes through Kaiser Motors (1953), American Motors Corporation (1970), and Chrysler (1987), Jeep became part of Stellantis in 2021.
EV strategy
Jeep's electric roadmap has slipped repeatedly. In January 2026 Stellantis scrapped the Jeep and Chrysler plug-in hybrids; in April 2026 Jeep had the Wagoneer S skip the 2026 model year after fewer than 200 were sold in the first quarter, and it is due back in 2027 with a NACS charging port. The electric Recon was planned for early 2026 and has moved to spring 2027, because Toluca is ramping up the hybrid Cherokee first.
Good to know
- Jeep has been headquartered in Toledo, Ohio, since 1945.
- The all-electric Wagoneer S skipped the 2026 model year and returns in 2027.
- Stellantis took massive 2025 writedowns on EV plans, emphasizing pragmatic electrification.
