History

Jaguar began in 1922 as the Swallow Sidecar Company, founded by William Lyons and William Walmsley to build motorcycle sidecars. The Jaguar name first appeared on a model in 1935, and in 1945 the company took the name itself. After years under British Leyland, a spell as an independent company and a period at Ford, Jaguar has belonged to Tata Motors since 2008 and forms Jaguar Land Rover together with Land Rover.

EV strategy

In 2021 Jaguar Land Rover decided to relaunch Jaguar as an all electric brand. A new brand identity and the Type 00 concept followed at the end of 2024, and the last combustion car was built on 19 December 2025. Jaguar has built no cars since: the first model of the new chapter was pushed back to 2026 (as of August 2026).

Good to know

  • Jaguar won the 24 Hours of Le Mans five times in the 1950s, adding two more victories in 1988 and 1990.
  • Until 1945 the company was called SS Cars, a name it dropped after the war.
  • Between the last combustion car in December 2025 and the first new electric model, the brand has no new cars to sell.
