History

Hyundai Motor Company was founded in 1967 by Chung Ju-yung and initially produced Ford-licensed models. The Pony (1975), Korea's first domestically designed car, marked its rise to independent automaker status. Hyundai became a global leader in affordable, reliable vehicles serving millions worldwide.

EV strategy

Hyundai has scaled back its battery-electric targets. At its CEO Investor Day in September 2025 the company no longer named a figure for electric cars, giving instead 3.3 million electrified vehicles out of 5.55 million sales in 2030, plus more than 18 hybrid models and range-extender vehicles from 2027; the earlier plan had called for two million electric cars in 2030. The IONIQ lineup keeps growing, most recently with the IONIQ 9. For North America, Hyundai builds electric cars at Metaplant America in Georgia.

Good to know

  • Chung Ju-yung first founded Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company in 1947 before the motor company.
  • The Pony (1975) was designed by Giorgio Giugiaro of Italdesign using Mitsubishi powertrain technology.
  • Hyundai's Ulsan plant counts as the world's largest integrated car factory: five vehicle plants on one site, around 1.4 million cars a year and a dedicated port of its own (as of 2025).
  • In March 2026 Hyundai announced 36 new or significantly refreshed models for North America by 2030, from combustion cars to electric ones.
