History

Honda was founded in 1948 by Soichiro Honda as Honda Motor Co., Ltd., starting with motorized bicycles and motorcycles. Since 1959, Honda has been the world's largest motorcycle manufacturer. Entering automobiles in 1963, Honda became a global innovation leader.

EV strategy

On 12 March 2026 Honda scrapped the 0 Series, cancelling the 0 SUV, 0 Saloon and Acura RSX planned for North America. For the business year ending in March 2026 the company put the cost of its reassessed electrification strategy at up to 2.5 trillion yen and reported its first annual loss since listing in 1957. The focus is now on hybrids such as the CR-V and Accord; Honda continues to develop electric cars for China with its partners there.

Good to know

  • To sell the Cub F clip-on bicycle engine, Honda mailed all 50,000 bicycle shops in Japan in 1952 and ended up distributing through about 15,000 of them; December alone shipped 9,000 units.
  • The 1949 Dream Type D was Honda's first true motorcycle with pressed-steel frame construction.
  • Honda is a global symbol for reliability and engineering excellence.
