History

Great Wall Motor was founded in Baoding in 1984 and grew big on pickups and off roaders rather than saloons. It was privatised in 1998 and listed in Hong Kong in 2003. Brands of its own followed over the years: Haval in 2013, Wey in 2017, Ora in 2018, Tank in 2021. Since 2020 the group has presented itself as GWM.

EV strategy

GWM's electric cars run mainly under the Ora badge, while Haval and Wey lean on hybrid technology; the battery division was spun off as a separate company, SVOLT, in 2018. The first European attempt went badly: GWM closed its European headquarters in Munich in August 2024. The restart announced in October 2025 is running: the ORA 5 led the way in 2026, GWM has sold through its own national companies in Italy and Spain since June 2026 and through an importer in Poland since July, while Germany runs via the Emil Frey group.

Good to know

  • The Wey brand carries the surname of company boss Wei Jianjun.
  • The name Ora nods to mathematician Leonhard Euler, whose surname is rendered as Oula in Mandarin.
  • Battery subsidiary SVOLT was spun off in 2018 and has stood beside the carmaker as a separate company ever since.
