History

Geely started out in 1986 making refrigerator parts, moved into motorcycles in 1994 and entered car manufacturing in 1997 as China's first private carmaker. Founder Li Shufu still runs the group. In 2010 Geely bought Volvo Cars from Ford, and in 2017 it added a majority stake in Lotus. At the end of 2025 the group took its premium brand Zeekr fully back in and delisted it.

EV strategy

Geely develops its electric cars on platforms of its own, first SEA and since 2024 the broader GEA architecture, and fits its own LFP cells under the Aegis name. The Geely brand itself only reached Europe in 2025 and has been on sale in Germany since March 2026, well after sister brands Volvo and Polestar.

Good to know

  • The group runs its own satellites: by September 2025 its Geespace arm had put 64 of them into orbit.
  • Li Shufu has personally held 9.69 percent of Mercedes-Benz Group since 2018.
  • Volvo Cars, Polestar and Lotus all sit in Li Shufu's web of holdings, and smart is run jointly with Mercedes-Benz.
