History
Guangzhou Automobile Group was formed in 1997 as the city of Guangzhou's state owned car group, tracing its roots to a components plant founded in 1948. GAC grew big not with brands of its own but with joint ventures: with Honda from 1998 and with Toyota from 2004. Its own passenger car brand, Trumpchi, arrived in 2010, the year the group listed in Hong Kong; Shanghai followed in 2012.
EV strategy
GAC has a dedicated brand for electric cars: Aion, founded in 2017 and given that name in 2020, develops its platform and battery technology in house. GAC arrived in Europe in September 2025, first in Poland, Portugal and Finland; Greece followed in December 2025 and the United Kingdom in May 2026. The European cars are assembled by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria.
Good to know
- GAC is one of the few Chinese groups running joint ventures with Honda and with Toyota side by side.
- The European Aion models do not come from China; they are assembled by Magna Steyr in Graz.
- The planned US launch was postponed indefinitely in 2019 because of the trade conflict, and Europe became the fallback.
