History
Fisker Inc. was founded in 2016 by Danish designer Henrik Fisker and Geeta Gupta-Fisker. It was Henrik Fisker's second attempt: his first company, Fisker Automotive, had collapsed in 2013, but he kept the trademarks. Fisker Inc. went public through a SPAC merger in 2020, and from late 2022 Magna Steyr in Graz built the Ocean SUV. In June 2024 the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
EV strategy
Fisker set out to do without a factory of its own: design, software and sales in house, production at a contract manufacturer. That made the start cheap and left the company with no manufacturing of its own when things went wrong. The remaining cars went to a US leasing firm in July 2024, which then committed money so that owners would keep receiving software updates.
Good to know
- The Ocean was not built in the United States but by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria.
- It was Henrik Fisker's second car company to fail: Fisker Automotive had already gone under in 2013.
- In July 2024 the bankruptcy court approved the sale of 3,231 Oceans to a leasing firm at around 14,000 dollars per car.
