History
Elaris was founded in 2020 in Grünstadt in the Palatinate and set up as an importer rather than a manufacturer: the cars were built by Chinese contract manufacturers, and Elaris adapted them to European requirements, put its own badge on them and sold them through partner outlets. On 20 January 2025 the district court in Neustadt an der Weinstraße ordered preliminary insolvency administration, and on 1 March 2025 the main proceedings opened and the business ceased trading.
EV strategy
Elaris developed nothing itself. It bought finished electric cars in China and brought them to Europe under its own name. That made the business cheap to start and left the brand exposed to purchase prices and trade policy: when the EU imposed countervailing duties on China-built electric cars in October 2024, the model came under pressure.
Good to know
- Elaris had no dealer network of its own and sold through workshop chains and online platforms.
- Of roughly 2,900 vehicles ordered, only about 600 had actually been delivered according to a 2023 report.
- A small importer with no plant of its own, Elaris nonetheless appeared as a UEFA Champions League sponsor.
