History
DS was established as an independent premium luxury brand in 2014, having existed as a Citroen sub-brand since 2009. The name DS means "déesse" (goddess) in French. The brand was positioned as a French alternative in the premium segment and has been part of Stellantis since 2021. DS pursues strong luxury positioning with a design focus.
EV strategy
In 2021 DS announced that from 2024 every new model would be available exclusively with an electric powertrain. It did not stay that way: the DS N°7, unveiled in March 2026, comes in three electric versions and alongside them as a self-charging hybrid with a three-cylinder petrol engine, which Stellantis now calls a multi-energy range. The flagship DS N°8 is pure electric, while the DS N°4 is offered as a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid besides its electric version. The brand focuses on French craftsmanship, comfort, and sustainability.
Good to know
- The DS N°8 is the brand's flagship, engineered as a full premium luxury EV.
- DS focuses on the 'French Art of Travel' with high-end interior materials including Nappa leather and Alcantara.
- The brand aims to compete with ultra-premium brands like Rolls-Royce and Bentley.
