History

The CUPRA brand was established as a standalone brand in January 2018, spun off from SEAT's performance division, although the name had been used as a SEAT performance sub-brand since 1996. CUPRA originates from SEAT's motorsport program with roots in racing heritage. As a fully independent brand within the Volkswagen Group, CUPRA positions itself as a sporty and youthful alternative in the electric vehicle market.

EV strategy

CUPRA set out to become a fully electric brand by 2030 and to launch only electric models from 2025. Neither holds any more: the Terramar, introduced in 2024, comes as a combustion and a plug-in hybrid model, and CEO Markus Haupt deliberately keeps the powertrain question open for coming models, because demand and charging infrastructure differ from country to country. The Born, the Tavascan and the Raval, built in Martorell since 2026, are fully electric.
