History

Cadillac was founded on 22 August 1902 and named after the French explorer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, who founded Detroit. The company grew out of the remains of the Henry Ford Company and quickly became America's luxury car brand. General Motors acquired Cadillac in 1909 and made it the group's flagship luxury marque.

EV strategy

Cadillac is methodically expanding its luxury EV portfolio, led by the LYRIQ and the performance variants LYRIQ-V of 2025 and Optiq-V. Although the brand originally aimed to sell only electric cars from 2030, the strategy now focuses on a balanced portfolio of combustion and electric models; for spring 2027 General Motors announced a new combustion generation of the CT5, XT5 and XT6.

Good to know

  • Cadillac was the first US car to win the Royal Automobile Club Trophy in 1908.
  • The company pioneered electrical systems, clutchless transmissions, and all-steel bodies.
  • In May 2026 Cadillac reported more than 100,000 electric cars sold in the US since the Lyriq launched in 2022, a good half of them in 2025 alone.
