History

BYD (Build Your Dreams) was founded in 1995 by Wang Chuanfu in Shenzhen as a battery manufacturer, starting with 20 employees and 2.5 million yuan in capital. The company gradually expanded into the automotive industry, establishing BYD Auto in 2003. Through innovative engineering and focus on battery technology, BYD became the world's largest manufacturer of plug-in electric vehicles. In 2022, BYD ended production of pure combustion engines to focus entirely on electric vehicles. At the end of 2025 the company employed around 869,600 people worldwide, close to 100,000 fewer than a year earlier.

EV strategy

BYD builds battery-electric cars and plug-in hybrids side by side; the flagship on the hybrid side is the fifth generation of the DM-i system, whose larger batteries stretch the pure-electric range. The LFP-based Blade Battery arrived in 2020 and set new safety standards. BYD intends to put all-solid-state batteries into cars in small numbers in 2027 and to mass-produce them only around 2030.
