History
BMW was founded in 1916 as Bayerische Flugzeugwerke and renamed Bayerische Motoren Werke (Bavarian Motor Works) in 1922. The company began by producing aircraft engines in Munich and later expanded into automobiles. BMW survived through various economic crises, particularly after brothers Herbert and Harald Quandt saved the company from bankruptcy in 1959. Today, BMW is a world-leading luxury and performance vehicle manufacturer, but belongs to no parent conglomerate; it remains an independent publicly traded company.
EV strategy
The Neue Klasse has arrived: series production of the iX3, the first car on the new electric platform, started in Debrecen, Hungary, at the end of October 2025, and the first customers took delivery in January 2026. BMW is sticking to its target of at least 50 percent electric sales by 2030; in 2025 the share was 17.7 percent. In Spartanburg the group has invested 1.7 billion dollars and intends to build at least six electric models there by 2030, starting with the iX5 from late 2026.
Good to know
- The iconic BMW logo, the white-blue roundel, is said to represent a rotating aircraft propeller and honors BMW's roots in aviation engineering.
- The BMW i range is a dedicated brand for electric vehicles, combining premium electric mobility with sustainable performance.
- The Quandt family is a long-term shareholder of BMW, holding a significant stake following their rescue of the company in 1959.
