History

Aiways was founded in Shanghai in 2017 by Fu Qiang and Gu Feng, two managers from the established car industry. In 2019 two prototypes drove from Xi'an to Frankfurt and set a world record along the way. In 2020 Aiways became the first Chinese brand to sell electric cars officially in Europe, in Germany through the Euronics electronics chain. The company ran short of money in mid 2023 and pulled out of its Chinese home market in May 2024.

EV strategy

Aiways builds electric cars only, on its own MAS modular platform, with cells from CATL. The European fresh start the brand gave up its home market for never happened, though: the planned New York listing fell through in January 2025. Since autumn 2025 there has been no service chain left in Germany, and existing owners struggle to obtain spare parts and software updates (as of August 2026).

Good to know

  • In 2019 two Aiways U5 prototypes covered roughly 15,000 kilometres from Xi'an to Frankfurt in 53 days, setting a Guinness world record.
  • In Germany, Aiways sold its cars from 2020 through the Euronics electronics chain rather than through car dealers.
  • In 2024 Aiways left its own home market first and tried to live on exports alone, the reverse of the route most Chinese brands take.
